The Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Position.

At first glance, Lux could seem more like a difficult academic quiz rather than a new popular music project from a musician whose previous single featured an international K-pop icon. Divided into 4 distinct movements and performed in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, often via the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, buoyed by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. The pure ambition alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to avoid overly academic posturing is nothing short of a miracle, with complete credit going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to fuse historical sounds with the present, its stakes feel much higher here, with the balancing act far more precarious. What really elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart apart, you still want to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds down like cartoonish impact. The track then segues to the wild single featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux is that you rarely exactly know—or even want to know—where it is going next."

Nearly each track ends in a totally distinct point from how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a cut that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins off dark and sinister, with prowling beats, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of the album is navigating the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spins upward. This trick is repeated on another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for high Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of hidden gems that takes time to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. Where some big pop albums of the year felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly creative visionary.
