The artist has donated the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's small live music spots.

He was awarded the award on October 16 as his latest record the album was declared the top album of the past year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part local spots played in his early career.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also took part, raising over £100k on his live tour to help 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported spaces that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues stemming from water damage, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in modernizing facilities and gear that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from concerts in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his honor winnings to charitable organizations.

When they received the prize in 1996 for their album their work, vocalist Cocker stated that the group would give their prize money to the organization War Child.

That year, rapper and singer the artist shared her award between multiple charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed new equipment," the artist told the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the community center that developed their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year M People contributed their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the disease.

"The victory was ample," said artist Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning touched another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the properties.
